Dumb Boss’s leadership style

This is a good one: it’s pay review time.

Last week, I was with Dumb Boss in a 1:1.  We had a minute to spare at the end, and I asked him if he wanted to give me my bonus letter (I have already received the bonus, but not the letter, which was due 2 weeks ago!), or my pay review letter.  His answer was that the bonus letter was wrong 3 weeks ago when he got it, and he hadn’t fixed it.  For the pay review letter, no, he hasn’t checked it yet.  But no conversation on pay increase.  None.

 Yesterday, his assistant was wandering around with large envelopes.  One had my name on it.

IT WAS MY PAY REVIEW LETTER!

I asked a colleague if she got hers the same way.  Yep, sure enough, this apparently happened every year.  No conversation, just a letter.

And, once you open it, all that’s there is a 4% increase.  4% is the standard budget allocated across the group.  Lawyers’ pays are going up 7-10% a year.  So nice of him to think about it.  Hmmmm.
